There are certain trades where I apply a fairly exacting standard before I would consider recommending anyone to neighbours or family, and roofing is very much one of them. I spent the better part of thirty years in structural engineering, and I have seen enough poorly executed roof work to know the difference between a contractor who understands what they are doing and one who merely goes through the motions. Paddy and his crew at Valley Roofing are firmly in the former category. The work was carried out with care, the materials were handled properly, and the finished result met the sort of standard I would have expected on a well-managed site. Furthermore, when I had a question about the approach being taken on a section of the repair, it was answered plainly and without any of the vagueness you sometimes encounter. Subsequently, I recommended them without hesitation to a colleague in Dungarvan who had a similar issue to deal with. I would engage them again, and I say that not as a matter of politeness but because I genuinely mean it.

The reason I'd point anyone in Carlow or the surrounding areas towards Barrow Valley Roofing is straightforward: they did what they said they'd do, when they said they'd do it, and the problem has not come back. That matters more to me than anything else when it comes to tradespeople. Pat came out, had a proper look at what was going on above the back bedroom, explained the issue clearly without overcomplicating it, and gave me a quote that was fair. There was a small mix-up on the start date — something came up on another job — but he rang ahead of time to let me know, rescheduled within the week, and that was that. No drama. The lads who came to do the work were tidy, got on with it, and left the place as they found it. I've had roofers here before who left more mess than they arrived with, so that was noted. We've had heavy rain since, including that awful stretch we had a few weeks back, and not a drop has come through. All in all, this is the kind of local company you want to hold onto the number for. I'll be using them again when the front of the house needs attention, which it will before long.

The one thing I want to single out about Barrow valley roofing — because it genuinely surprised me, having had previous bad experiences with tradespeople who treat you as though you've no business asking questions — is how responsive Pat was throughout the entire process; not just at the quoting stage when he presumably wanted the work, but right through to completion. Every message answered, every query addressed without that familiar sense of being an inconvenience. I had done a reasonable amount of research before committing, compared two other local contractors, and the pricing from Barrow valley roofing was fair without being suspiciously low, which, if anything, gave me more confidence rather than less. The one small thing I'd note is that I did have to follow up once to confirm a revised start date — it wasnt a major issue and the work itself was completed well — but a slightly more proactive communication around scheduling changes would round the whole experience out. That aside, I'd recommend them without hesitation.

That feeling when you realise the damp patch on the ceiling is gone and you can finally stop moving the good armchair out of the way every time it rains — honestly, what a relief. Pat and his lads had it sorted in no time, and I cannot believe I put up with that skylight dripping for as long as I did. Completely professional from start to finish.
